WENDI HIPOLITO – Congratulations!
Here is Wendi’s essay:
MY TIME IS NOW
There are times in life when a person realizes that everything is going to change; for me, that moment happened when I heard a song. That song was not mainstream or complex, it was simple yet breathtaking. I fell in love. That voice that I heard with such raw emotion and that one guitar playing a simple riff impacted my life in such a way that I knew that without that feeling of wonderment, I would not have a reason to dream or even want to for that matter. From that moment on, I took every moment I could to listen to a song and for those few minutes, be able to block everything out except for those words and their melody. They make me feel like I matter and that I can maybe do something great.
Music is a universal language that has the power to give hope and joy which is something this world lacks. Though behind every great piece of music is a composer. An artist. A writer. Whatever you want to call them; each and every one of them began somewhere. I can only imagine the greatest musicians picking up their instrument or singing that perfect note for the first time and just knowing the potential that they have. It is people like that that have changed the world for the better. I one day hope to join them and give someone a reason to keep fighting like music did for me. It was why I wanted to play guitar in the first place. It is why I dream of some day playing many instruments and making a difference with them. Some people see themselves in the future being teachers or scientists, but I see myself surrounded by instruments with an eager face and no other intention than to play my heart out.
All in all, I deserve a chance to learn and expand my music abilities. Not because I think I am better than anyone else or because I just want to take advantage of any opportunities, but for the love that I have for music because it means the world to me. It is the first thing I think of when I wake up and the last thing I think of before I go to sleep. Without it, I would not be the person I am today which I hope becomes someone worth while. For there is a time when you realize when you realize your life is about to change. That time is now; regardless of whether this essay gets chosen or not. My time is now.
